May Working Bee

Our monthly working bee took place under a blue sunny sky and a lot of people came out to help or just stop for a chat.

As always we harvested a lot of Malabar spinach that shows no signs of stopping its growth.
We also cut back the sweet potatoes which have started to take over bed 1. We also sowed more brassica and lettuce and added a few flowering plants that were donated by one of the members.

In our round bed we now have a new batch of beetroot and kale and the coriander has grown nicely as well.

In bed 3  we again planted peas in the hope that at least a few will survive the slug attack this time.

The most exciting part though was the harvest of our very first compost!

We used the compost to put down a layer in the native plants patch where the warrigal greens had started to die off (either from lack of water or illegal use of weed killer). We cleaned out all the dead plant growth and spread the compost around the still healthy looking areas to try and replenish the soil there to allow it to keep more water and moisture.

So much Malabar spinach

Cutting up the green waste for the compost

Bed 1 also got a layer of our own compost
